If you have children, you know of their fascination with different toys. They truly brighten every young one’s day and keep them invested in play for hours. However, not everything about toys is so harmless as you think. These items need to be included on your home cleaning list, as over time they harbour plenty of bacteria and germs. The last thing you want is your beloved child coming into contact with such dirty items. Toys cleaning is not as difficult as you may believe and the following tips only prove it:
- Soft toys – most soft toys, such as the typical teddy bear have a care label that says if the item can be machine washed. Before you throw them in the dishwasher, be sure to check if the toy needs any repairs. If you don’t do that, you risk some part of it falling off during the wash cycle. In any case, you will need to put the toys in an old pillowcase or a net laundry bag. Remember to wash on the lowest temperature setting and add some disinfectant for a more hygienic clean. If machine wash is out of the question, you can hand wash soft toys. Add a little washing detergent to the lukewarm water and soak them in there for about 15 minutes. Gently squeeze out as much moisture as you can and then dry with a towel. Dry thoroughly before giving it back to your children.
- Bath toys – the main issue with bath toys is that they can get mouldy over time. The constant moisture around them is ideal for that. To give them a nice cleaning service, you can wash them in warm water with a few drops of washing-up liquid. Use a toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies and rinse thoroughly. If the toys leak black flakes when you squeeze them, it is a clear sign that they have developed grime inside and it is time to replace them.
- Teething toys – teething toys made of plastic provide temporary relief to sore gums. However, seeing as how they come into frequent contact with little mouths and hands, you want to keep them clean at all times. Warm water combined with washing up liquid does the trick nicely.
- Lego – a lot of people say that Lego pieces may be cleaned in the washing machine, but that is not something the manufacturer recommends. Instead, you should wash the pieces by hand in warm water that is not hotter than 40 degrees Celsius. Let the pieces soak in there for 10 minutes and check to see if any of them are particularly grimy. You can scrub them with a toothbrush. If any of the pieces have stickers on them, you must not submerge them in water, but clean with a damp microfibre cloth only.
