Are you making your home dirtier while cleaning?

Even when you have the best intentions for cleaning your home properly, you can make certain mistakes that are contributing to the mess. According to multiple experts, this may very well be the case. Before you engage in another round of home cleaning, ensure you aren’t making things worse than they are. Here is what you should avoid:

• You use feather dusters –  even if advertisements are adamant that feather dusters are quite effective at trapping and locking dust, that is not the case. For the most part, feather dusters simply transfer dirt from one surface onto another. Either that or they just send it airborne, which makes things quite bad, don’t you agree? You are much better off using microfiber cloths for the task, or even a disposable paper towel with some cleaning solution. The result will be far better than you think.

• You use the same rag around the house – even though you keep spritzing cleaning solution on the rag, using it on multiple surfaces around the home is a sure recipe for cross-contamination. A rag hangs on the grime you have collected from one place and transfers it to the next area it touches. You should use different towels and rags for every room of your home. Colour code those so that you do not make a mistake.

• Immediately placing the toilet brush back on the holder – doing this enables all the germs and moisture to get trapped in the brush container. Once there, they start to breed and multiply, only leading to more problems. After use, stick the brush between the seat and the toilet dish itself. That way it can dry completely and not contaminate the brush holder.

• Not cleaning the sink – sinks are traditionally very dirty. Germs and bacteria rapidly grow there, as they find the moist environment ideal. On top of that, there is plenty of food from all the particles that get stuck there. The issue only gets bigger when food and water are left in the sink. Wipe down the area quickly after each use and deep clean it every week.

• Not cleaning the washing machine – prepare to feel disgusted. Skin cells, stains, dust mites and other nasties can linger in the drum of the washing machine, as well as on the door. If washing your clothes in dirty water doesn’t sound appealing, then make sure you do a frequent cleaning of this appliance.

• Not cleaning the vacuum cleaner – another cleaning tool, which needs some cleaning back is the vacuum cleaner. If you don’t change the filter for too long, the machine will not be able to pick up dirt and other debris. It is best to look after vacuum bags and canisters after each use, to avoid the buildup of dust.
