Don’t ever think that you can just run the vacuum cleaner over the mattress and call it a day. No, the task is much more complicated than that, as long as you are aiming for decent results. If you wish to remove all the dust mites and spoils within your mattress, you will do well to follow this guide:

  • Start by vacuuming it – before you do anything else, you should vacuum the mattress. It is best to use the upholstery cleaning attachment for this task. Begin at the top, and work your way down. Run the attachment in overlapping paths of narrow width. Once you are done, be sure to vacuum the sides of the mattress as well. It would be a mistake to skip that area since it accumulates dust and other spoils as well.
  • Use baking soda to deodorise – while it is nearly impossible for a person to feel their body smell, know that over time the aroma will build up quite a lot. Sweat leads to quite an unpleasant smell, especially after it builds up. To rid your mattress of the unpleasant smell, you should sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda and rub it in with a brush. Let it sit there for about 10 minutes and then vacuum it up. Baking soda is well-known for its absorbent qualities. Not only does it bond with the liquid and the spoils dwelling in the mattress, but it also absorbs the unpleasant smell. Also, yes, you can use it to remove odours from the fridge as well.
  • Check for stains – typically, your mattress will acquire what is known as ‘bodily fluids’ stains. Even though it is best to address such stains right away, you cannot expect to stay vigilant in your sleep. So for blood stains, apply a mix of hydrogen peroxide, 1 tbsp salt and 1 tbsp dish soap. For another type of stain, blot with ammonia. Remember not to apply too much and to ventilate your room.
  • Flip the mattress – to even out the wear; you should flip the mattress every few months. Remember to clean the other side of the mattress as well.
  • Protect with a cover – because cleaning the mattress is not that easy, you should be a little protective. Add a washable mattress cover. It will prevent dead skin cells and body liquids from coming into contact with the mattress itself, thus preserving it for longer.
