We often find ourselves in a scenario where we can’t actually plan ahead what happens to our rug. Children, pets, the usual spilling of your morning coffee… the amount of mess goes from 0 to “damn it” quite rapidly. Well if you’re like us and you like to have an easy solution in all cases that can deal with tough spots – here are some options for making an effective carpet cleaner utilizing only household items!
– The first solution that I want to reveal is extremely useful and works for cleaning rugs as well as upholstery. What you are going to require is vinegar, household ammonia and a little dish detergent. Nothing expensive really. Also you will require foam producing soap dispenser or some sprayer to distribute the solution with. This is extremely important – you require the foam, not the liquid! Once you pick the items from your drawer, simply mix 2 cups of water with 2-3 tbsp. of dish soap. Add one table spoon of vinegar with a half of a tbsp. of ammonia. Put it into the soap dispenser or spray bottle and then just give it a little shake. There you go – your rug cleaner is ready, simply spray the foam on top of the stained surface, scrub it in and then wipe it off using a towel. You’ll immediately see the whitening in the scrubbed place.
*Important* Remember that there is ammonia in the cleaner! This means that you need to always try it on a small and obstructed spot to see if the combination doesn’t bleach the colors or pull them out. In addition you have to be in a well ventilated place while making the cleaning solution, as the smell of the ammonia may be really unpleasant, but you won’t sense it in the mixture afterwards.
The 2nd cleaner is for a cleaning machine and a little trickier, but works really well and is going to leave your rugs smelling like a spring garden. For the formula you’ll need laundry detergent (preferably HE detergent to prevent foaming), a concentrated all-purpose detergent, Oxi clean (or similar) and fabric softener. All of those cleaners come very cheap compared to rug cleaner off the shelf. All you have to do is combine 2 tbsp. of laundry soap with a 1/4 cup of multi-purpose cleaner, add a scoop of Oxi clean and finish with 1 tsp of fabric softener. When you have mixed the ingredients, stir the solution until the Oxy clean powder is completely dissolved. To help the process you can add a cup of hot water and make your life much easier. When the mix is ready, pour it into your carpet shampooer and fill in the tank with at least a gallon to a gallon and a half water.
If you prefer to do things in your own way, do the work cheap and with great efficiency, these carpet cleaning solution recipes are going to be your lifetime friend and hopefully – you will never need to worry where to look for a new rug again! Go ahead and give them a try.
