Contract Cleaners LondonThe dishwasher is undoubtedly one of the most convenient appliances in your kitchen. It surely spares you a ton of home cleaning effort in the form of washing the dishes. Anytime you have a family meal; you can just throw everything in there and let the machine do the cleaning for you.

Dishwashers are not solely meant for washing dishes. There are other items you can put in there for sure. However, you must not get carried away. The last thing you want is ruining an item in there, just because you were too lazy to wash it by hand or too negligent of the risks. Following are some things you should not put in there:

  • Any treasured item – if there is a precious vase, bowl, glass or anything else you cherish as a family heirloom, you should not put it in the dishwasher. While it is true that the machine will clean it thoroughly, there are some risks. It may clink with some other item in there and break partially, or even completely. Any precious items you have are best washed by hand, and not risked in the dishwasher. The same goes for fancy china and dishware with delicate patterns and gold rims. It is just not safe to clean them in the dishwasher.
  • Wooden cutting boards/utensils – wooden items may alter their consistency in the dishwasher, due to the high temperature. If you don’t want splinters, then wash these items by hand. Scrubbing them with a nylon pad and rinsing with warm soapy water is best for any wooden utensils. As a bonus care tip for them, you should oil them once a month to preserve their shine.
  • Take-out containers – beware of washing take-out containers in the dishwasher. Every item should be labelled explicitly as dishwasher-safe. Otherwise, it is at risk – the heated water the machine uses may alter the chemical composition of the material, making it unsafe to place food in. You don’t want plastic compounds leaking into your food, do you? Wash any take-out containers by hand.
  • Copper pans – the best thing about copper pans is their look, which you want to preserve. If you wash them in the dishwasher, their colour will be altered, and that will make you like them less.
  • Crystal dishware and glass – if you are scared to clean such items by hand, know that the dishwasher could, in fact, do worse. The high temperature and the cleaning cycle of the machine could wear out the crystal, making it highly likely to break. Besides, the proximity of other items inside is another risk factor, which you should not ignore.
  • Cheese grater – it is not that the dishwasher will damage the item in some way, but rather that it is powerless against the tiny bits of cheese stuck within the holes. Sadly, you can only do the routine cleaning in the dishwasher, and wash the item by hand when it is severely soiled.

Now that you know what not to put in your dishwasher, you can better utilise this machine during your cleaning service.
